Sapphire and Steel was a TV
show on ITV in the late seventies/ early eighties. The
protagonists Steel (played by David McCallum) and Sapphire
(Joanna Lumley) were complete enigmas throughout the series
though they did give a few clues about their nature. They were
"elements" with special powers and were sent by someother worldly agency to prevent
"time" breaking in. |

There were only six
'adventures' made though apparently there was to have been at
least one more. None of these stories had titles. The writing,
production values and the absolute conviction of the actors
turned these mostly low budget shows into spooky and atmospheric
dramas making minimal cast members and limited music cues into
assets. |

At the time of their original
transmission the kid's TV mag 'Look-In' ran a tie-in comic strip. More recently, the pair have been
resurrected by Big Finish for a series of audio adventures starring David Warner
(Steel) and Susannah Harker (Sapphire) |
