The Big
Finish audio The Juggernauts appears to
tackle the same ground as did the DWM strip
Emperor of the Daleks. Any similarity is
coincidental.
The original plan had been to make three
new stories showcasing the three Dapol Doctor figures
and selected monsters and companions. We couldn't have
got away with not using the Dapol Daleks.
There has always been a missing Doctor Who/
Dalek story in my opinion. How did Davros go from being a
prisoner about to stand trail (at the end of Revelation of the
Daleks) to being the Dalek Emperor (in Remembrance of the Daleks)?
This episode aims to put a possible solution. Using the 7th
Doctor and setting it pre Remembrance, the only possible
companion to use is Mel- a character that was much
underused on TV.
It wasn't the first Dalek story to be considered
for this slot though. Battlelines in the Stars was a
proposed episode that didn't feature the Doctor but showed the
Time Lords and Daleks getting together to sign a non aggression
pact. The Time Lords have been betrayed however leaving the
universe on the brink of a Great Time War...
Shot on 4 Jan 08 along with the other Dapol Doctors
episodes. This one, as the more complex was filmed first
beginning with the Skaro exteriors.
The sets were made especially for the story and based
loosely on the design of the Dalek city seen in the Dr Who and
the Daleks movie. It was filmed on an opaque glass table with a
light shone through it to provide an eerie atmosphere.
Editing was very straight forward. There
were only two 'special' frames- compositing the lower
area of the trial room with the Dalek Supreme's upper
gallery.
As a Davros retrospective, this story is quite continuity
laden referencing three of his four appearnces- Genesis,
Destiny and Resurrection of the Daleks.
In the Doctor's personal timeline, this story
comes somewhere in season 24 prior to Dragonfire where he meets
Ace.
For Davros, it comes between Revelation of the Daleks where
he is captured by the Supreme Daleks forces and taken for trial
on Skaro and Remembrance of the Daleks where he is the Dalek
Emperor and the Supreme is in control of 'renegade Daleks'.
